Hello.
First, I want to express my gratitude for your reading of this article. No matter how you got here, it truly means the world to me that you have clicked onto my Substack and opened my first post. This idea has been a long-time coming and frankly, overdue. However, as you will come to find if you stay subscribed and/or up-to-date with my posting, there have been some extenuating circumstances this year that have delayed this project. I hope that you will continue on this journey with me.
So, why create a Substack?
Principally, I love writing. I love sharing stories. I love writing about meaningful things in my life. I laugh as I write this now because up until my senior year of high school, I despised writing and thought that I was not talented or creative enough to do it outside of an academic setting. That was until my Senior Synthesis project in high school, which required me to write a ~40 page reflective paper on my life and my goals and aspirations for the future. Suffice to say, I loved the end product. I was so proud of my work and loved the feeling of expressing my thoughts and experiences into words. This then fueled my desire to join The Gavel at BC my sophomore year, as I was able to explore sports and political issues in my own voice.
Since graduating, however, I have really missed that feeling. Being an accountant, as a shock to everyone, isn’t the most qualitative work in the world which only adds to that feeling. In expressing this feeling to friends, mentors, and my therapist, I have been recommended to start some sort of blog to continue writing. As I gained much inspiration from the brilliant Izzy Jones, her Substack can be found here, I have now found myself at a point ready to start this project.
Additionally, I have always found writing, especially in a personal voice, to be therapeutic. Even if nobody ever reads any of my posts, I look forward to staying committed to putting my thoughts into words and being able to look back upon this in the future and be proud.
So, what can you expect?
Mainly, I see this as an avenue to reflect on my life, both from the past and the present. I am very interested in connecting themes throughout my different experiences in life, and I hope that this will serve as a way to express my feelings and emotions about those themes. I hope that you, the reader, can also gain some insight and identify the similarities in your own life, too. If that’s ever the case, I would love to hear all about it.
I also like to have some fun, so you can also expect to see an occasional piece about basketball or soccer, a book or movie review, or a few songs that I have had on repeat from the week prior. Or even just a short appreciation post about a conversation or moment I shared with someone that I’d want to share with you.
I am also open to any and all suggestions that you might have, or if you would like me to further explore a story or a theme from an older article. Please don’t hesitate to reach out via email.
Finally, what is the significance of the title “Corbin’s Corner”?
Simply, it is an honor to my late mother. There was a diner with this name that she and I would go to once a month when I was a kid. We would share fries, a chocolate shake, and plenty of laughter. It is one of the fondest memories I have with her. Her passing is also one of the reasons why I have started this Substack, and so I thought the name was very fitting. It reminds me of her and the good times we had there, as well as a feeling of comfort, love, and acceptance. I hope that you will be able to experience that through some of the stories I share of her. I am confident you will.
So, with all of that being said, welcome. I am so happy you are here. Whether you stay for one article, or all of them, know that you are deeply appreciated.
Can’t wait for next post man, super proud of you
